Illnesses

Cancer

I am worried that the person with cancer might die

One in three people get cancer at some time in their lives. Lots of cancers can be treated. People who have got better from cancer have regular checks that the cancer hasn’t returned but in many cases they are 100% healthy. There are lots of different ways of treating cancer so sometimes doctors have to try several different ways before they find the best one for a person. Here are three common ways of treating cancer:

  • Surgery (to remove a tumour),
  • Chemotherapy (powerful drugs),
  • Radiotherapy (a sort of special x ray)

Both Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy can make someone feel very ill - this can seem strange and frightening. People receiving these treatments often feel very tired, weak and sick and their hair may fall out.

Some cancers cannot be treated. It’s okay to ask adults in your family about whether the person with cancer might die. Or you could ask your doctor for information. It is possible that they might not be able to say for sure that someone will get better and not knowing can be very difficult. Find out more about feelings and how to deal with them.
